GitLab is seeking a Senior Release Engineer to design, standardize, and operate reliable enterprise application delivery within the Enterprise Technology & AI team. This role focuses on establishing scalable CI/CD practices for business-critical platforms including Salesforce, Zuora, and other enterprise systems, enabling engineering teams to ship changes safely and quickly with clear operational controls.
Key responsibilities include designing and maintaining GitLab CI/CD or comparable pipelines for enterprise applications, covering validation, testing, packaging, deployment, promotion, rollback, and post-release verification. You will develop reusable automation using Python and other scripting languages to reduce manual release activities and improve repeatability. Daily use of AI-assisted engineering tools (Claude, Duo Agent Platform, or comparable enterprise-approved tools) is mandatory for pipeline development, scripting, test creation, troubleshooting, documentation, and operational automation.
You will define and implement CI/CD patterns for enterprise platforms, establish environment and promotion strategies across development, test, staging, and production, and implement quality gates, automated checks, approvals, and audit trails appropriate for enterprise releases. The role involves partnering with application owners and development teams to define branching, versioning, release cadence, and rollback standards, while improving release observability through deployment dashboards, pipeline metrics, and operational reporting.
Additional responsibilities include investigating failed deployments, leading root-cause analysis, contributing to release calendars and change planning, building documentation and runbooks, coaching engineers on CI/CD tools and release automation, and collaborating with security, compliance, and architecture teams to meet control requirements without creating delivery friction.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience, 7+ years in release engineering or DevOps, strong hands-on experience with GitLab CI/CD or comparable platforms in production, proficiency in Python or similar scripting languages, and mandatory hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools.
