Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history, delivering empirical Earth observation data via a cloud-based platform to commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. The company controls every component of hardware design, manufacturing, data processing, and software engineering.
You will join the Solutions Enablement Group as a Senior Product Manager for the "Solutions Crafting" pod, bridging Planet's platform capabilities with specific customer outcomes. Your mission is to move Planet from selling raw data to selling measurable value in key verticals: Defense & Intelligence, Civil Government, and Commercial.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead customer discovery and feasibility studies to validate high-value use cases, ensuring development is anchored in addressable market needs
- Partner deeply with Engineering and Data Science to decompose complex vertical requirements into detailed technical specifications, user stories, and prioritized backlog items
- Act as the primary Engineering liaison for the pod, managing sprint planning and backlog grooming to balance feature delivery with technical debt
- Define and deliver reusable "building blocks" within the Planet Platform that scale solutions across multiple customers rather than building one-offs
- Collaborate with Product Marketing and Sales to package technical capabilities into clear business narratives demonstrating ROI to non-technical buyers
- Build relationships with external partners and government agencies to identify collaboration and scale opportunities
This is a full-time, hybrid role requiring 3 days per week in the San Francisco office. Planet is a global company with employees working remotely worldwide and offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and The Netherlands.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of relevant work experience in product management, ideally within Earth Observation or geospatial analytics
- Bachelor's degree in a related field
- Experience launching "solution" products (bundles of data, analytics, and services) rather than standalone features
- Ability to translate complex vertical needs into clear engineering tasks and user outcomes
- Solid understanding of vertical market dynamics (e.g., government procurement, supply chains) and experience assessing market size/viability
- Managing end-to-end product lifecycles and navigating ambiguity in fast-paced environments
Desirable qualifications:
- Experience with Earth Observation (EO) data or heavy analytical data streams
- Background in Solution Engineering or Technical Consulting prior to Product Management
