Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history, delivering empirical geospatial data via a cloud platform to commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. As Senior Product Manager for Defense & Intelligence (D&I) Tasking Solutions, you will own the Tip-and-Cue system and Tasking Strategy Engine—translating complex mission rules into optimized satellite collection commands. You bridge Planet's core Tasking platform with defense mission offerings, representing D&I operational needs across platform product lines including Constellation Services (CxS) and Real-Time Insights (RTI).
You will partner closely with Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) teams in the field to identify recurring integration patterns and convert them into durable, reusable platform capabilities that accelerate delivery in high-consequence defense environments. Key responsibilities include defining how customer configuration-driven logic translates to sensor and constellation selection, collection cadence, and multi-constellation orchestration; converting defense business rules into dynamic tasking strategy designs to reduce pixel-to-insight latency; consolidating inputs from field engineering, GTM, and adjacent product managers into a prioritized roadmap; and collaborating with compliance and security teams on export control and national security adherence.
You will work independently owning a roadmap spanning multiple concurrent priorities, presenting technical trade-offs to both engineering and executive audiences. The role requires 6–8 years of technical product management bridging core platform and field teams, solid understanding of tasking/scheduling/workflow-orchestration systems, proven ability to separate generalizable capabilities from one-off customizations, and experience translating operational rules into system workflows. Background in geospatial intelligence, satellite tasking, or defense technology is required. Preferred qualifications include hands-on satellite operations experience, orbital scheduling APIs, constellation orchestration, active or prior U.S. Security Clearance (Secret or TS/SCI), and direct operational background within the U.S. Defense & Intelligence Community. This is a full-time hybrid role requiring 3 days per week in either San Francisco or Arlington office.
