Impulse Space seeks a Senior Payroll Manager to lead and scale U.S. payroll operations for a rapidly growing aerospace and manufacturing organization. This role owns all aspects of multi-state payroll processing, ensuring accurate and timely bi-weekly payroll for exempt and non-exempt employees across engineering, corporate, manufacturing, test, and operations functions.
Key responsibilities include managing payroll for shift-based and manufacturing workforces with complex timekeeping, overtime, shift differentials, and premium pay requirements. You will review and approve payroll calculations, adjustments, off-cycle payments, bonuses, commissions, and equity transactions. The role requires deep expertise in federal, state, and local payroll tax compliance, wage and hour regulations, and multi-jurisdictional reporting obligations.
You will develop and implement scalable payroll processes, policies, and internal controls to support organizational growth. This includes managing payroll tax registrations, filings, audits, agency inquiries, and year-end activities such as W-2 preparation and 1099 reporting. You'll lead payroll readiness for new manufacturing facilities and multi-state expansions, including tax registration and labor law compliance setup.
Cross-functional collaboration is essential—you'll partner with Legal, HR, Manufacturing, Operations, Finance, and Accounting on workforce growth, payroll accruals, reconciliations, monthly close, and financial reporting. You'll manage payroll reporting and tax withholding for equity compensation, benefits, retirement plans, and leave programs, including 401(k) compliance testing and audits.
The role also involves evaluating and optimizing payroll technologies, automation, and system integrations across payroll, HRIS, ERP, timekeeping, and workforce management platforms. You'll serve as the primary escalation point for complex payroll, tax, and compliance matters, providing guidance to managers and employees while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
Required: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, HR, or related field; 8+ years progressive payroll experience including multi-state operations ownership; 2+ years payroll leadership/management experience; deep knowledge of payroll tax regulations and wage/hour compliance; experience with both exempt and non-exempt populations; demonstrated experience in manufacturing, aerospace, or similarly complex multi-state environments with shift-based workforces; experience leading payroll systems implementations and process improvements; advanced Excel and payroll reporting tool proficiency.
