Xero is seeking a Senior Mobile Engineer to help shape and build the Xero Accounting App, a flagship mobile experience used by millions of small businesses worldwide. This is a hands-on senior role with meaningful ownership, where you'll take complex mobile features from idea to production, contributing to technical design and making pragmatic engineering decisions with real-world impact.
The role involves deep collaboration across Product, Design, backend, and platform teams to solve challenging problems at scale. You'll be instrumental in Xero's strategic transition from native iOS/Android development toward React Native architecture, bringing your deep native platform expertise to architectural decisions while building new cross-platform capability. Your understanding of mobile performance, release practices, and customer experience will be critical during this modernization.
Key responsibilities include shipping meaningful customer value across important workflows (banking, invoicing, payments, notifications, tasks, file management), owning complex features end-to-end, and contributing to technical design that shapes APIs and data flows. You'll operate at scale, taking responsibility for production software—ensuring availability, performance, accuracy, security, and scalability. You'll participate in incident response, post-mortems, and identify recurring failure patterns.
Beyond your own code, you'll raise the engineering bar through mentoring, thoughtful code reviews, and investment in engineers around you. You'll find ways to continuously improve how the team builds and delivers software, removing friction and leveraging automation and AI-assisted development to shorten feedback loops.
The team is distributed across Melbourne and Sydney with regular collaboration and dedicated boost days. This hybrid role offers flexibility in how you work while maintaining strong cross-functional partnerships.
Required: strong, demonstrable experience building and shipping production mobile applications using Swift (iOS) and/or Kotlin (Android); deep knowledge of native platform realities including performance, lifecycle management, release processes, observability, and production operations; curiosity and adaptability to develop React Native capability; comfort applying native expertise to platform integration, performance, debugging, and architectural decisions; experience owning complex mobile features end-to-end.
