Isar Aerospace is a fast-growing New Space company developing the Spectrum Launch Vehicle to provide sustainable, environmentally friendly launch solutions for small and medium-sized satellites into Low Earth Orbit. The company is privately funded by world-leading technology investors and is disrupting the traditional aerospace industry with innovative rocket design and manufacturing approaches.
You will join the LV Structures team as a Senior Mechanism Engineer, responsible for the design and development of critical vehicle mechanisms including stage separation mechanisms, fairing separation mechanisms, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electro-mechanical actuators, and umbilical fluid and electrical systems. This is a full-cycle design engineering role where you will own the outcomes of key mechanism design trades and drive the development of the Spectrum Launch Vehicle from concept through qualification and acceptance.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design of vehicle mechanisms through all design phases (CAD, drawings, sizing) until qualification and acceptance
- Requirements definition for vehicle mechanisms
- Driving trade studies, manufacturing optimization, and performance analysis for mechanisms
- Interfacing with teams in static structures, propulsion, AGNC, AIT, and production
- Creating, reviewing, and releasing development and flight hardware drawings and design documentation
- Identifying and resolving build, test, and design optimizations
- Contributing to testing activities including test plan definition, test execution support, and post-processing
You will need strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders, direct reports, and leaders within and outside the organization. Your mechanical and integrated design experience, combined with a proven track record of delivering results on time and with quality, will enable you to excel in this collaborative environment.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field with proven record of excellent results and timely execution
- 8+ years of experience in product full-cycle design engineering roles, including CAD (Siemens NX preferred), assembly, and test execution
- Proven experience with manufacturing processes, project management, scheduling/planning, materials, and surface treatments
- Strong understanding and proven experience of ISO GPS or ASME GD&T tolerancing principles
- Experience with testing activities, definition of test plans and procedures, support to test teams in test execution and post-processing
- Excellent understanding of kinematic synthesis, pneumatic/hydraulic and electro-mechanical actuation, mechatronics, instrumentation, structures strength, stability, fatigue failure modes, and tribology
- Collaborative and communication-driven attitude; teamwork is essential
- Proficient English skills (German is a plus)
BONUS SKILLS:
- Previous experience with kinematic synthesis, pneumatic/hydraulic and electro-mechanical actuation, mechatronics, instrumentation, structures strength, stability, fatigue failure modes, and tribology in the aerospace industry
- Experience in structure and fluid systems for launch vehicle design or equivalent aerospace products, complex parts manufacturing, and assembly techniques
- Strong experience with design engineering tools such as NX, TeamCenter, Solidworks, Catia, or equivalent
- Experience with structural sizing tools such as Ansys, Altair HyperWorks solutions, Nastran, etc., and analytical sizing calculations
- Strong experience with ERP/MES systems, product lifecycle management (PLM, e.g., Teamcenter), and/or data management
- Willingness to travel to launch sites and suppliers when necessary for hardware support
