Kit is an email marketing platform for creators—coaches, YouTubers, authors, podcasters—to grow audiences, automate marketing, and sell digital products. The company is 100% remote, independent, and on a mission to help creators earn $1 billion using their platform. Kit is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to serve as the in-house legal subject matter expert, partnering closely with the executive team (reporting to the COO) to lead product legal strategy and execution. The role focuses on privacy, data, AI, compliance, commercial contracts, customer security requirements, and scalable legal support across the organization. A key priority is building practical, repeatable systems to handle a growing volume of privacy questions—particularly as Subscriber Signals, a newer product, evolves. You'll advise on a fast-moving tech company with multiple revenue streams (SaaS, digital commerce, paid recommendations, advertising) and a connected ecosystem of apps including SparkLoop and Subscriber Signals. You'll be at the center of cross-functional problems where product, business, and legal strategy intersect. In the first week, you'll get up to speed on the business model, products, and current legal landscape. In the first month, you'll map recurring privacy support questions and design scalable intake and guidance systems, particularly around Subscriber Signals, and establish processes for GDPR compliance and customer security questionnaires. Over six months, you'll become the go-to legal partner across product, engineering, security, and GTM teams, building playbooks, templates, and self-service guidance. By year one, you'll help Kit operate at higher legal maturity, establish durable systems for common questions, and significantly reduce reliance on outside counsel. You'll own core legal work in-house, reduce the need for outside counsel, and know when specialized outside counsel is truly needed. You'll partner regularly with leaders across product, sales, finance, and people operations. REQUIREMENTS: - Deep expertise in data, compliance, and product law - Strong ability to navigate U.S. and European data privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA), including data controller vs. processor distinctions - Ability to translate privacy and compliance requirements into scalable playbooks, templates, intake processes, and self-service guidance - Experience supporting customer security questionnaires and partnering with security, sales, product, and engineering teams - Familiarity with SOC 2 Type II and associated legal, privacy, and customer requirements - Understanding of intellectual property law, especially brand, content, and software - Understanding of commercial contracts - Clear communicator and trusted advisor; ability to simplify complexity - Experience as in-house counsel at a tech company OR serving a tech portfolio at a top-tier startup-focused firm (e.g., Fenwick & West, Cooley) - J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school - Active member in good standing of a State Bar Association - Strategic thinker who sees legal as a lever, not a blocker - Deeply curious and business-oriented - Collaborative problem-solver with a "how might we" mindset - Deep belief that creator success is Kit's success - Comfort working independently as sole in-house legal expert - Ability to move quickly and take ownership; not risk-averse or overly cautious - Ability to factor business goals, numbers, and customer needs into legal advice
