Kit is a creator-focused email marketing and digital commerce platform on a mission to help creators earn $1 billion. The company is 100% remote, independent, and has built a product loved by coaches, YouTubers, authors, podcasters, and other creatives.
As Senior Legal Counsel, you will serve as the in-house legal subject matter expert, partnering closely with the executive team (reporting to the Chief Operating Officer) to lead product legal strategy and execution. Your primary focus areas include privacy, data protection, AI compliance, commercial contracts, customer security requirements, and scalable legal support across the organization.
Key responsibilities include:
**First Week:** Onboard on Kit's business model, products (Kit, SparkLoop, Subscriber Signals), and revenue streams. Meet stakeholders, review external counsel relationships, and assess current legal agreements, privacy questions, and customer security requests to identify risks, opportunities, and inefficiencies.
**First Month:** Map active data processing, privacy, AI, and compliance initiatives. Design a scalable intake and guidance system for recurring privacy support questions, particularly around Subscriber Signals. Partner with Sales, Sponsorships, Security, Product, and Engineering. Own GDPR and data compliance vetting; establish processes for customer security questionnaires.
**First Six Months:** Become the go-to legal partner across product, engineering, security, and go-to-market teams. Build scalable systems—playbooks, templates, intake processes, self-service guidance—for recurring privacy, data-use, and compliance questions. Partner throughout the product lifecycle, especially for Subscriber Signals. Prioritize legal risks, reduce outside counsel reliance, and streamline workflows.
**First Year:** Elevate Kit's legal maturity across privacy, compliance, product counsel, commercial contracts, and security support. Establish durable systems enabling teams to answer common questions independently while escalating appropriately. Position privacy, data, and compliance as strategic enablers, significantly reducing outside counsel dependence.
You will be Kit's sole in-house legal expert, with outside counsel available as needed. The role requires someone who sees legal as a business lever, not a blocker; who is deeply curious and business-oriented; and who can move quickly with ownership and initiative.
**Requirements:**
- Deep expertise in data, compliance, and product law
- Strong knowledge of U.S. and European data privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA), including controller vs. processor distinctions
- Ability to translate privacy and compliance requirements into scalable playbooks, templates, and self-service guidance
- Experience supporting customer security questionnaires and partnering with security, sales, product, and engineering teams
- Familiarity with SOC 2 Type II and associated legal, privacy, and customer requirements
- Understanding of intellectual property law (brand, content, software)
- Understanding of commercial contracts
- Strong communication and trusted advisor skills
- Experience as in-house counsel at a tech company OR serving a tech portfolio at a top-tier startup-focused firm (e.g., Fenwick & West, Cooley)
- J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school
- Active member in good standing of a State Bar Association
- Located in the United States
