Generalist is building embodied foundation models and general intelligence for the physical world, combining large-scale AI and robotics. The company was founded by researchers and engineers from OpenAI, Boston Dynamics, Google DeepMind, and other frontier labs, with a track record of shipping AI breakthroughs including PaLM-E, RT-2, Gemini Robotics, and next-generation robot platforms. As Generalist's first in-house legal hire, you will take broad ownership across commercial, corporate, privacy, and technology matters while building the legal function as the company scales. You'll work closely with company leadership and the applied AI & partnerships teams, managing external counsel where specialized support is needed. Key responsibilities include: drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial agreements (partnerships, customer/vendor contracts, pilots, SOWs, NDAs, technology transactions); supporting complex negotiations with leadership; handling corporate and fundraising matters including financings, governance, board/stockholder matters, and diligence; advising on legal issues specific to Generalist's technology (training data, data-use rights, models, fine-tunes, IP, confidentiality, privacy, deployment, and emerging AI/robotics issues); serving as a practical legal advisor across the company, translating legal risk into clear recommendations; building scalable templates, playbooks, policies, and processes; and staying current on developments in AI, LLMs, robotics, privacy, IP, regulation, and market practices. You should have 6–10+ years of relevant legal experience, including meaningful time at a technology company or tech-focused law firm. Strong foundational experience in commercial and corporate law is essential, along with the ability to work across a broad range of legal issues. You must be comfortable with complex technical concepts, able to work effectively with engineering and research teams, and experienced in advising on technology, data, IP, and privacy matters. The ideal candidate has strong commercial judgment, excellent communication skills, and comfort operating in fast-moving environments where applicable law and contractual precedent may still be developing. Experience at AI, ML, robotics, or frontier technology companies—especially growth-stage startups—is preferred, as is significant experience leading or supporting complex commercial deals, strategic transactions, and high-value legal transactions.
