Salary: GBP 48,000 - 72,000 / annual

GoCardless is a global bank payment company processing US$130bn+ annually across 30+ countries. The company provides Direct Debit, real-time payments, and open banking solutions to over 100,000 businesses, with AI-powered fraud reduction and connections to 350+ platforms. As Associate Legal Counsel (5-6 years PQE), you will advise UK teams across the business on a broad range of legal matters. Working within a busy legal team, you'll take a consultative, business-focused approach rather than working in isolation. Key responsibilities include: - Support and advise the Partner team on strategic partnership deals and negotiations - Advise Go-To-Market teams on high-value UK customer deals - Review, negotiate, and provide pragmatic commercial support on customer, partnership, and supplier contracts - Supervise junior lawyers on negotiations and specific matters - Instruct and manage external legal counsel - Support strategic projects, including new product launches and template rollouts - Build and maintain self-help tools, playbooks, and guides for the legal team and wider business - Drive process improvement on high-volume work, including contracting automation and workflow optimization - Handle ad-hoc legal issues across the organization You should have private practice training and/or in-house experience in fast-paced environments. The ideal candidate is driven, independent, and able to apply knowledge across diverse legal areas. Technology experience or keen interest in tech is valued. UK legal qualification is required. Desired experience includes negotiating complex contracts with sophisticated counterparties, reviewing marketing materials for regulatory compliance, quickly grasping new legal concepts, and using sound judgment. You should be a self-starter with excellent communication skills, able to translate complex legal concepts into clear language. Experience with FCA requirements, payment services, IP management, SaaS solutions, or APIs is a bonus. Base salary: £48,000–£72,000.
