Q-CTRL is seeking an exceptionally skilled Lab and Field Technician to join its Quantum Sensing Research team in Sydney. The team comprises approximately 30 specialists in theoretical and experimental atomic physics, cold-atom interferometry, navigation modeling, and Bayesian estimation. You will work across cutting-edge Gravimetry Research groups, translating novel quantum sensing research into real-world capability and product. In this role, you will be responsible for the preparation, deployment, and logistics of custom, low-volume quantum sensing prototypes and ultra-delicate assemblies for real-world field trials. You will work almost exclusively on ensuring prototype field trials lead to successful outcomes. The role requires a natural problem solver with outstanding intuition who identifies issues before they occur and takes action toward solutions. You will thrive in an R&D environment, handle high-stakes precision hardware with extreme care, and figure out how to succeed when faced with unexpected field realities. Key responsibilities include: - Assisting in the conduction of field trials, contributing to in-lab preparation and on-trial activities including testing, logistics, transport, installation, setup, and operation of state-of-the-art sensors - Owning just-in-time solutions to unforeseen problems when deploying and operating sensors on a range of platforms and locations - Diagnosing, troubleshooting, and fixing complex mechanical, logistical, and hardware issues; serving as the go-to problem-solver when components don't fit or trial plans are adjusted - Maintaining lab equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters, and tools; training others and contributing to an efficient, organized lab space - Utilizing Inventor CAD modeling to design simple brackets, enclosures, boxes, and mounting hardware - Performing light manual machining, modification, and custom fixture fabrication in-house to rapidly adapt components - Partnering directly with quantum scientists, mechanical engineers, and electrical engineers to assemble, test, and iteratively improve hardware concepts Note: You do not need a background in quantum mechanics or quantum hardware. Q-CTRL has world-class scientists to handle the physics; they need your exceptional problem-solving abilities to ensure success for field trials and deployments. Requirements and Ideal Experience: - Field deployment experience and demonstrated ability to contribute to the success of complex field trial activities - Hands-on familiarity working in electronics, optics, or laser laboratory environments (e.g., troubleshooting electronics, handling optics, or basic laser safety protocols) - Experience with basic programming and networking, including Python - Experience working in an academic or industrial research environment with proven ability to communicate effectively and collaborate side-by-side with scientists and research physicists
