Voyager Technologies is a defense and space technology company focused on mission-critical solutions for national security and space exploration. This Senior Industrial Automation & Controls Engineer role is based in Pueblo, CO and reports to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager, with responsibility for designing, deploying, and continuously improving automation and controls systems for solid rocket motor production and energetic materials manufacturing.
Key responsibilities include: designing, programming, commissioning, and maintaining PLC-based control systems and robotic integration across multiple hardware platforms (Codesys-based systems like Beckhoff, Beijer, Wago, and robot platforms from ABB, Yaskawa, Fanuc); leading evaluation and deployment of automation solutions including robotic work cells, machine vision, and ML-driven process optimization; designing electrical systems compliant with NEC and UL508A standards for hazardous environments (C1D1/C2D1); designing plant networking architecture for sensors, valves, PLCs using analog and Ethernet protocols; designing HMI/SCADA screens with emphasis on operator usability and troubleshooting support; creating and maintaining schematics, documentation, and bills of materials; collaborating cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Safety, and Compliance teams; implementing Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies; and mentoring junior engineers and technicians with a clear growth path toward leading the automation and controls group.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering with 7+ years of industrial automation experience (or Master's with 5+ years, or 11+ years without degree); extensive platform-agnostic PLC programming proficiency across multiple vendors; proven experience designing and integrating robotic systems into manufacturing; working knowledge of machine learning applications in manufacturing (vision inspection, predictive maintenance, adaptive control); hands-on experience building electrical cabinets, running field wiring, and creating electrical documentation; strong problem-solving ability with minimal supervision; and ability to work in hazardous manufacturing environments.
