Cala Health is seeking a Senior Firmware Test Engineer to join its R&D team. The company develops non-invasive prescription therapies for chronic diseases, starting with hand tremor treatment (Cala kIQ) and expanding into neurology, cardiology, and beyond.
In this role, you will own the design, development, and execution of pre-DVT and formal Design Verification Testing across multiple product initiatives, supporting both commercial releases and clinical trials. You'll be a hands-on engineer who not only executes rigorous test protocols but also has the coding proficiency to debug firmware, add test hooks, automate test methods, and enable deeper validation features.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, develop, and document test tools, methods, and protocols for firmware design verification across active projects
- Build and maintain automated test infrastructure with expanding regression coverage for continuous firmware validation
- Work cross-functionally with engineering teams to develop and bring up new test tools and methods
- Navigate existing firmware repositories using coding skills to debug issues, add test hooks, and build test features
- Verify critical subsystem functionalities including electrical stimulation waveforms, BLE communications, OTA-DFU fault handling, sensor measurements, and logging
- Participate in risk analyses and requirements development for design verification activities
- Leverage AI tools to accelerate test script development, understand unfamiliar firmware, and draft documentation
- Participate in DHF deliverables and design reviews in a phase-gated development process
This is an individual contributor role with significant technical scope and responsibility for firmware validation strategy across the product portfolio.
REQUIREMENTS:
- BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent
- 5–7+ years of experience in embedded firmware testing and design verification
- Embedded firmware experience with strong understanding of hardware-firmware-software system-level interactions
- Proficiency in C/C++ and Python with ability to read, modify, and inject test hooks into bare-metal or RTOS firmware
- Experience generating, designing to, and testing to product requirements
- Demonstrated troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills with comfort using hardware debugging tools (oscilloscopes)
- Experience writing test protocols, comprehensive test reports, and executing formal Design Verification Testing
- Excellent written, interpersonal, and team communication skills
- Prior experience in medical device development, including testing under Design Controls
- Familiarity with medical device standards: IEC 62304, IEC-60601, ISO 13485
Nice to have: experience with external regulatory testing labs (EMC, Safety, FCC), human clinical studies, or testing embedded device interactions with companion mobile apps, desktop tools, or cloud services.
