In this Senior Engineer II, Platform role, you will be a backend generalist responsible for designing, building, and evolving the core backend services and platform infrastructure that the rest of engineering depends on. You'll spend most of your time writing code and designing systems, with increasing focus on orchestration, design, and cross-team collaboration as the company scales.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and architect distributed backend systems and services that handle high traffic and data volume, owning service boundaries, data models, and API contracts
- Design asynchronous, event-driven systems using queues, workers, and messaging
- Integrate third-party platforms and services, managing reliability challenges at scale
- Build self-service platform capabilities enabling product teams to ship independently
- Shape data architecture across relational and document stores, making informed tradeoffs on schema design and storage choices
- Maintain platform observability and dependability through instrumentation, SLOs, and incident response
- Mentor engineers across levels, set technical standards, review code, and raise the engineering bar
- Own complex, cross-team projects from concept through production, aligning stakeholders and driving progress
- Leverage AI coding agents (including Claude Code) as a standard part of your development workflow
The role offers genuine ownership in an early-stage environment with real ambiguity. You'll self-manage, work across teams, and operate as a hands-on individual contributor with increasing mentorship responsibilities.
Requirements:
- Deep, broad backend experience on complex systems; strong candidates typically have a decade or more of experience
- Fluency in TypeScript, Python, and Go, with three or four languages on your resume (Rust or similar is a plus)
- Proven track record building robust backend services and platform infrastructure
- Experience architecting systems and data schemas across relational and non-relational databases
- Daily fluency with AI coding agents and demonstrated ability to use them to ship faster without compromising quality
- Startup grit: self-management, hands-on approach, and strong cross-team collaboration
Bonus qualifications:
- Experience mentoring or leading a small team as a player-coach, with openness to expanding that role over time
- Infrastructure and DevOps depth (Terraform, Kubernetes, CI/CD)
