Salary: USD 233,000 - 262,000 / annual
Muon Space, a LEO satellite constellation provider founded in 2021, seeks an experienced Director to lead the Bus Structure and Missions team through rapid growth. This role oversees a large, cross-disciplined team responsible for designing and owning spacecraft bus structures, ground support equipment (GSE), testbeds, and mission-specific hardware tailoring. The Director reports to the Senior Director of Hardware Engineering and manages strong talent across mechanical, thermal, structural, and electrical engineering disciplines.
Key responsibilities include architecting and qualifying a catalog of bus platforms to meet diverse mission requirements; collaborating with Product, Business Development, System Engineering, Software, and Operations teams to ensure buses align with customer needs; understanding mission-specific and instrument-specific requirements through collaboration with Mission Management and customers; implementing bus platform instances and ensuring mission milestones are met; owning spacecraft-level structural and thermal analysis plus bus-level testing strategies; producing and maintaining mission-specific hardware-in-the-loop testbeds for integrated software/hardware testing on flight-representative systems; supporting new mission proposals with cost modeling and feasibility assessment; designing mechanical and electrical ground support equipment (MGSE & EGSE) for spacecraft production; and mentoring multiple levels of team managers to enable scalable growth.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned, cross-disciplined leader with 15+ years designing or managing complex, high-reliability systems in harsh environments (spacecraft, autonomous vehicles, drones, etc.) and 8+ years managing engineers and engineering managers. A B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field is required. Strong program management, budget and schedule management, and technical fundamentals in mechanical and electrical design are essential. The role is hybrid, requiring three days per week on-site in San Jose, CA.
