Viam is a robotics engineering platform founded by Eliot Horowitz (co-founder and former CTO of MongoDB) that enables developers to configure, control, and manage robots intuitively and quickly. The company is ~100 people, headquartered in New York City, and is expanding its developer advocacy presence to the West Coast.
As Senior Developer Advocate, you'll report to the SVP of Product & Education and lead efforts to help developers discover Viam, understand its capabilities, and start building with the platform. This is a remote role with travel to events and conferences.
Key responsibilities:
- Represent Viam at conferences, meetups, hackathons, and developer events through speaking, teaching, and hands-on collaboration with developers
- Build creative robotics projects that demonstrate Viam's capabilities—ranging from robotic arms and computer-vision systems to smart devices and physical AI experiments
- Create technical content including tutorials, videos, sample code, workshops, demos, and talks
- Grow engagement in Viam's Discord and other developer communities while building your own credibility in relevant technical spaces
- Experiment with emerging technologies and identify timely opportunities for Viam to build, teach, or participate
- Assemble, test, and troubleshoot software and hardware for demos and projects
- Gather developer feedback and bring insights back to Product and Engineering teams to inform roadmap priorities
You'll work independently to scope, build, debug, and iterate on projects with limited direction, while explaining complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
Requirements:
- Proven track record creating high-quality technical content for developers (tutorials, videos, sample projects, workshops, talks)
- Professional software engineering experience building, shipping, and maintaining production software; proficiency in Python, Go, C++, or TypeScript preferred
- Strong technical judgment and ability to independently scope and execute software projects
- Hands-on experience with hardware, IoT, embedded systems, electronics, or maker projects (professional robotics experience not required)
- Ability to explain complex technical concepts with clarity and depth
- Deep understanding of how developers discover, evaluate, and adopt new technologies
- Comfort with public speaking, video content creation, and direct community engagement
- Ability to move quickly, experiment frequently, and make sound decisions about what to build and how
- Willingness to travel and participate in occasional evening or weekend events
