Mercury is a fintech platform providing banking, treasury, and financial workflow solutions for startups and technology companies. This role leads the product design team responsible for Mercury's core user experiences, with a strategic focus on evolving interfaces as AI capabilities reshape software interaction patterns.
You will define and evolve Mercury's interaction philosophy, particularly around AI-native, conversational, adaptive, and proactive experiences. You'll set the quality bar for the Interfaces organization (mobile, dashboard, agentic products), ensuring experiences are intelligent without being opaque, proactive without being intrusive, and distinctly Mercury.
Key responsibilities include leading and developing a team of product designers, creating an environment where designers take creative risks and produce exceptional work. You'll shape product strategy alongside Product and Engineering, bringing design thinking into ambiguous problems early. You'll stay hands-on through critique, prototyping, and collaboration, pushing ideas further and helping teams turn ambitious concepts into pragmatic experiences. You'll also elevate the craft and product-thinking bar across Mercury's broader 40+ person Design organization by sharing frameworks and emerging ideas.
You should have exceptional product taste with unusually strong judgment about how great software behaves and feels. You think deeply about AI-native interfaces, actively experimenting with conversational and intelligent interaction models. You're a craft-obsessed design leader who has successfully led product designers without becoming distant from the work. You see interactions as systems, connecting patterns, information architecture, and principles across the product. You're a strategic cross-functional partner to Product and Engineering, bringing design thinking into strategy conversations. You operate independently with strong conviction, thriving when problems matter but answers aren't obvious.
Experience with AI-powered or consumer software, strong prototyping skills, Design Systems partnership, or deep motion and interaction expertise are especially relevant, though the company prioritizes quality of thinking and work over checking every box.
