Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history, delivering unprecedented Earth observation data via a cloud-based platform. The Data Visualization Team sits within Marketing's Creative Group and partners with web developers and graphic designers to make Planet's geospatial data and derived products (Planetary Variables) accessible and compelling to customers, prospects, and the public.
In this hybrid role (3 days/week in San Francisco), you will create data visualizations and visual narratives that showcase novel applications of Planet's unique satellite imagery and datasets. You'll collaborate with Marketing and Communications teams to develop graphics, animations, and interactive content that educate audiences on how Planet data solves real-world problems across commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors.
Key responsibilities include: identifying and telling stories that leverage Planet's imagery combined with complementary datasets; collaborating with cross-functional teams to create content for diverse audiences; providing technical feedback on marketing materials (animations, videos, datasheets, presentations) to ensure accurate data representation; preparing and sharing imagery with press, think tanks, and analysts under tight deadlines; and establishing best practices for data visualization across the organization.
You bring 6–8 years of technical experience, ideally with geospatial and remote sensing data. You're proficient in Python for geospatial analysis, expert-level with geospatial software (QGIS, ArcGIS, GDAL, Avenza tools), and fluent in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator). You understand cartographic and data visualization best practices, can articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, and thrive in dynamic, deadline-driven environments. Experience with web mapping, interactive storytelling, front-end frameworks (React, D3, NextJS), hyperspectral data, video/animation, or the space/Earth observation industry is a plus.
