NerdWallet is seeking a Senior Counsel to join its legal department, reporting to the Deputy General Counsel. This hybrid role combines employment law and product counsel responsibilities, requiring a versatile corporate generalist with deep expertise in both areas. As Employment Counsel, you will review and update employment policies, provide guidance on employee relations, reasonable accommodations, compliance, performance management, terminations, and compensation matters. You'll manage legal documents including offer letters, employment agreements, separation agreements, and handbooks. You'll conduct employment diligence in M&A transactions, support HR on employee issues and investigations, manage employment law claims and arbitration, and educate stakeholders on legal developments affecting the business. As Product Counsel, you will support product and marketing teams across multiple initiatives, reviewing, drafting, and negotiating revenue and vendor agreements. You'll respond to legal requests from product, business development, data and privacy, finance, marketing, and senior leadership, communicating complex legal concepts clearly and pragmatically. You'll implement streamlined compliance processes, support M&A deals and team onboarding, negotiate vendor and referral agreements, and collaborate on new product ideas and marketing copy review. Required qualifications include 6+ years of relevant experience combining in-house and major law firm practice, with at least 3 years as Employment Counsel and 3+ years as Product Counsel (or Corporate Counsel). You must have deep knowledge of California and/or New York employment laws and applicable federal laws, and be a member of at least one state bar (preferably California or New York). You should demonstrate sound judgment, integrity, discretion, urgency, excellent communication skills, ownership, and adaptability. Product support experience should include truth-in-advertising, UDAP, UDAAP, consumer protection laws, commercial agreement drafting and negotiation, and knowledge of privacy laws including CCPA, GDPR, and GLBA. Preferred qualifications include experience with contract management platforms (Ironclad, Blee, LawVu) and financial services regulatory background (insurance, mortgage, consumer lending, banking, investing).
