Salary: USD 180,000 - 300,000 / annual
Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, Jetpack, WooCommerce, Tumblr, and other major platforms, is seeking a Senior Counsel to support product, privacy, and regulatory work across its global business.
You will advise product, engineering, trust & safety, and marketing teams on implementing a broad range of regulations and industry standards, with focus areas including content safety, consumer protection, intellectual property, privacy, and data security. Key regulatory areas include the Digital Services Act (DSA), UK and Australian Online Safety Acts, EU AI Act, and worldwide age-assurance laws.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide product counseling on web hosting, site creation, content publication, ecommerce, social media, and related products using a business-forward approach centered on customer needs
- Deliver subject matter expertise on data protection and privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA), advise on consent frameworks for digital marketing and advertising, and build scalable compliance documentation processes
- Track upcoming regulations, participate in industry groups globally, and represent Automattic before regulators and government agencies
- Work with trust & safety teams to develop policies that champion freedom of expression and user safety while ensuring legal compliance
- Design processes and workflows enabling the legal team to scale compliance effectively as regulatory and privacy requirements increase
You should have a JD from a US-accredited law school with 5+ years of relevant experience (or be an EU-based attorney with equivalent credentials). Familiarity with open source, user-generated content, web hosting, social media, ecommerce, and digital advertising business models is essential. You are humble, independent, comfortable working asynchronously, and willing to stretch into areas like litigation or IP as needed. You excel at providing clear thinking and actionable recommendations even with imperfect information.
