Hercules is seeking a Senior or Staff-level Content Writer to create technical content for their engineering blog. You will work closely with engineers to document and publish stories about the hardest technical challenges the company is solving—the systems they build, the decisions and tradeoffs behind them, what worked, what failed, and what was learned.
Key responsibilities include:
- Deep dive into engineering and research to write about complex technical challenges, systems architecture, and decision-making processes.
- Discover new story ideas by spending time with engineers, reading internal documents, and exploring the product and codebase.
- Publish frequently and consistently; shipping is a core part of the culture. The goal is to move from draft to published article to the next one rapidly.
- Collaborate with engineers to co-write and edit posts, transforming rough notes, conversations, and technical drafts into polished articles supported by diagrams, code examples, and data.
The company references Uber Engineering, Shopify Engineering, Cloudflare's blog, and Cursor's research blog as examples of the depth and quality expected.
Hercules operates with three core principles: shipping fast and iterating quickly, striving for excellence in all outputs, and maintaining a hungry, action-oriented mindset to break through obstacles.
The founding team works in-office in San Francisco (Kearny and Bush). The company has a strong preference for in-office work but is open to remote arrangements for exceptional candidates willing to work US time zones and travel to the office regularly.
Benefits include unlimited AI token budget, flexible vacation policy, healthcare/vision/dental, daily meals in the office, and the promise of doing the best work of your career.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Exceptional technical writing ability: you explain complex ideas clearly without losing important details. Your writing is terse, simple, precise, and useful.
- Portfolio of excellent writing for an engineering audience is explicitly required.
- Technical depth: ability to read code, understand system architecture, and follow discussions about infrastructure, databases, APIs, and AI systems. You can test code examples and explain engineering decisions.
- Strong interviewing skills to uncover interesting details: why something was difficult, what alternatives were considered, where approaches broke down, and what finally worked.
- Strong research and analytical rigor: ability to read technical papers, interpret benchmarks and experimental results, and verify evidence behind claims. You explain methodology, tradeoffs, and limitations accurately.
- Editorial judgment to recognize what engineers will find surprising or useful, turn complicated projects into focused stories, and use diagrams, charts, and code examples effectively.
- AI native: you use AI to increase output speed and improve quality.
