Arista Networks is seeking a Senior C++ Engineer to join the Software for Open Networking in the Cloud (SONiC) team in Bucharest. SONiC is open-source software that runs on Arista switches to power some of the world's largest data center networks.
You will be a core member of a fast-paced, high-caliber team responsible for developing, qualifying, and delivering SONiC software features. Your work will span the full lifecycle from requirements gathering through deployment, with ownership of projects from definition to delivery.
Key responsibilities include:
- Writing functional and design specifications for system software managing hardware components
- Independently implementing solutions to small-sized problems using C, C++, and Python
- Writing test plan specifications and implementing automated test programs
- Debugging and fixing problems identified by automated tests
- Collaborating on team efforts to solve larger routing protocol challenges
- Working with Customer Support Engineers to analyze and resolve network problems
- Mentoring junior engineers on Arista's development environment and SONiC development practices
- Reviewing specifications and implementations from team members and the SONiC community
- Managing implementation and debugging schedules and reporting progress to project leads
You will develop a deep understanding of networking fundamentals including L2, L3, and commercial switching hardware. The role emphasizes strong software engineering fundamentals, independent problem-solving, and the ability to work effectively both individually and as part of a team.
REQUIREMENTS:
- BSc, MS, or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering with 2+ years of post-graduate work experience
- Knowledge of C, C++, and/or Python
- Knowledge of UNIX or Linux
- Understanding of L2/L3 networking (desirable: IP routing protocols such as RIP, OSPF, BGP, IS-IS, or PIM; Layer 2 features such as 802.1d bridging, Spanning Tree Protocol, Link Aggregation Control Protocol, Link Layer Discovery Protocol, or RFC 1812 IP routing)
- Ability to utilize, test, and debug packet forwarding engines and hardware vendor-provided software libraries
- Infrastructure functions knowledge related to distributed systems (messaging, signaling, databases, CLI techniques)
- Hands-on experience in design and development of ethernet bridging, routing, or distributed systems software (desirable)
- Experience with enterprise or service provider class Ethernet switch/router system software development, or significant PhD-level research in network routing and packet forwarding (desirable)
- Applied understanding of software engineering principles
- Strong problem-solving and software troubleshooting skills
- Ability to design and implement solutions to small-sized problems independently; ability to work on small teams solving medium-sized problems with limited oversight
