Ground News is a news comparison platform that helps readers break free from algorithmic filter bubbles and understand media bias across the political spectrum. Unlike algorithm-driven news platforms, Ground is supported by reader subscriptions and maintains editorial independence.
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you'll be a core member of the backend chapter, reporting to the Head of Engineering. You'll design, build, and operate the services that power Ground's mobile app, web app, and browser extension for millions of readers. - Engaging in projects from conception through design, implementation, and delivery
- Collaborating across departments to translate stakeholder needs into technical solutions
- Designing and shipping backend services with a focus on reliability, observability, and performance
- Planning and executing safe rollouts with proper monitoring and risk mitigation
- Working in a lean, agile environment that values shipping over process
This is a hands-on role where you'll balance technical excellence with operational rigor, directly impacting how reliably users engage with news content.
REQUIREMENTS:
- At least 5 years of professional experience with TypeScript, including Async/Await syntax
- At least 3 years of experience with Node.js
- At least 3 years of experience with relational databases (MySQL/Postgres preferred, but other RDBMs acceptable)

- Proven track record of shipping and scaling reliable services for consumer products
- Experience planning and executing safe rollouts with monitoring and risk mitigation
- Strong critical thinking and decision-making ability
- Ability to write efficient, scalable code and recognize anti-patterns
- Strong desire to learn and progress as a developer
