Mainspring Energy manufactures fuel-flexible, low-emissions local power solutions (Linear Generators) for Fortune 500 companies, data centers, and utilities. The company is seeking a Sales Director for Public Power Origination to lead commercial strategy and transaction execution across municipalities, electric cooperatives, and investor-owned utilities (IOUs).
You will serve as an executive-level, outward-facing origination leader responsible for driving high-value, complex energy transactions from initial engagement to financial close. Your core responsibilities include:
• Sourcing, structuring, negotiating, and closing complex commercial arrangements including equipment sales, long-term service agreements (LTSAs), capacity contracts, and project partnerships with public power counterparties
• Leveraging and expanding your existing network of utility executives, procurement leads, board members, and energy traders to rapidly originate pipeline opportunities
• Representing Mainspring at industry conferences (APPA, NRECA, EEI, regional ISO meetings) and customer sites, commanding rooms and building authentic long-term trust with key decision-makers
• Positioning Mainspring's Linear Generator as the solution for utility needs including data center interconnection delays, load growth, generation retirement replacement, and firm capacity requirements
• Leading complex negotiations on term sheets, MOUs, equipment purchase agreements, and customized commercial structures alongside internal legal, regulatory, product, and finance teams
• Managing responses to competitive solicitations (RFPs) and integrated resource planning (IRP) engagements
• Feeding real-time market intelligence and customer pain points back to product, engineering, and executive leadership to influence roadmaps
This is a travel-intensive role (up to 50%) requiring comfort with client dinners, conference circuits, site visits, and last-minute travel to close deals. You will work remotely but must be willing and able to travel extensively across North American power markets.
Requirements:
• 16 years of total experience in North American power or clean energy sectors, with at least 8 years of direct transaction experience in an outward-facing origination or commercial role with direct access to counterparties
• Proven track record originating, negotiating, and closing complex, high-value energy transactions (equipment sales, PPAs, BTAs, capacity contracts, large infrastructure agreements) with municipalities, cooperatives, and/or IOUs
• Deep working knowledge of public power procurement processes, G&T (Generation & Transmission) co-op structures, board governance, RTO/ISO market rules, and utility financial models
• Willingness and ability to travel up to 50%
• Highly charismatic, extroverted, and confident in boardrooms and informal settings; exceptional ability to build instant rapport with senior utility leaders
• Self-starter with an active, portable network of utility, co-op, and municipal decision-makers
• Deep understanding of power economics, capacity markets, spark spreads, tax credits (IRA/OBBBA), project finance (NPV, IRR), and grid interconnection mechanics
• Ability to orchestrate internal technical, regulatory, and finance experts to solve complex customer challenges
Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Economics, or related field (MBA or advanced degree preferred)
• Deep existing network across specific regional wholesale markets (PJM, ISO-NE, NYISO, MISO, ERCOT, SPP, SERC, or WECC)
