As Safety Programs Lead on the Policy team, you will operationalize, audit, and manage Applied's safety programs, incident response processes, and internal safety reporting. Operating within an independent safety function, you will provide oversight of safety across global operations, identify emerging risks, and ensure safety processes are consistently applied and defensible within regulatory frameworks. Key responsibilities: - Create, manage, audit, document, and implement safety processes across global operations - Translate regulatory, safety, engineering, legal, and operational considerations into processes, standards, playbooks, and decision-making structures - Drive safety escalations and decisions to closure with clear implementation and compliance tracking - Track and analyze safety performance indicators, trends, and anomalies to validate and improve safety processes - Lead Applied's response to incidents and internal safety reporting; monitor compliance and effectiveness - Lead incident response tabletop drills across the global footprint - Work with business teams and customers to evolve safety programs with new activities and partnerships - Develop and deliver training programs to drive a safety-first mindset across operations - Collaborate with operations, engineering, and customers on safety best practices The role requires a high-agency individual who can take ambiguous problems, develop appropriate solutions, align internal partners, and drive execution. The company operates in-office (5 days/week) from Sunnyvale with flexibility for occasional remote work and family accommodations. REQUIREMENTS: - 5-7+ years of experience managing safety systems in highly regulated transportation industries - Bachelor's degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Risk Management, or related field - Background in operational safety, risk management, or safety assurance within fleet, logistics, or engineering environments - Strong analytical mindset with ability to interpret data, identify patterns, and present insights to engineering and management audiences - Demonstrable ability to operate independently and make sound safety judgments - Good understanding of industry-relevant standards and guidelines (e.g., AV, automotive, industrials) - Ability to develop and implement robust safety processes and procedures NICE TO HAVE: - Experience with autonomous vehicle or ADAS testing and development - Background in automotive, aviation, or mining safety management systems - Experience with global autonomy regulations (e.g., CA DMV, NHTSA) - Familiarity with automotive systems, electronics, and safety-critical systems
