Clay is a fast-growing SaaS platform providing data enrichment and workflow automation for go-to-market teams. The company recently raised a $100M Series C and crossed $100M in revenue, with a $5B valuation as of early 2026. This is a foundational hire on the Accounting team to build the cost of revenue function from the ground up.
In this role, you will own the cost of revenue accounting function across Clay's 200+ data provider relationships. Key responsibilities include: defining cost of revenue classification methodology for hosting, infrastructure, and data provider costs; building and owning the monthly cost accrual process to capture vendor costs accurately before invoices arrive; reconciling vendor invoices against internal usage data across the provider network; executing month-end close for cost of revenue including journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analysis; and delivering Clay's first complete gross margin view.
You'll partner closely with the Data Partnerships team on vendor negotiations and contract structuring, ensuring accounting and cost implications are considered before deals are signed. You'll also lead systems and audit readiness efforts, applying AI and modern tooling to design scalable vendor reconciliation and cost accrual workflows, and prepare the function for Clay's first external audit.
The ideal candidate has 4–6 years of progressive accounting experience with meaningful exposure to revenue accounting, cost accounting, vendor/AP management, or accrual accounting. Big Four or public accounting experience is a plus. You should have solid knowledge of US GAAP cost classification principles and accrual accounting, be data fluent and comfortable reconciling large vendor datasets (SQL is a strong plus), and have excellent written communication skills. A proven track record of building processes from scratch in high-volume, variable contract environments is essential. Nice-to-haves include high-growth startup experience, exposure to usage-based or consumption-based business models, vendor/procurement contract management tool familiarity, an active CPA, and hands-on experience with relevant accounting systems.
