Anthropic is seeking a Research Counsel to join its Legal team, advising on legal matters across the full lifecycle of frontier AI model development and research. This role sits at the intersection of AI safety, regulation, and responsible innovation.
You will serve as a subject matter expert on copyright, privacy, data use, and AI regulation (EU AI Act, U.S. state laws, emerging global frameworks). Key responsibilities include:
• Advising research and data teams on data sourcing, licensing, partnerships, and use; shaping Anthropic's data acquisition strategy as laws evolve
• Coordinating regulatory readiness and model launches, reviewing model documentation and system cards, responding to regulatory inquiries
• Supporting Responsible Scaling Policy work on biological and chemical risk, including capability evaluations and dual-use research questions
• Counseling teams on Societal Impacts, Economic, Alignment, Interpretability, Model Welfare, and Beneficial Deployments research—advising on research design, data collection, external collaborations, and publication review
• Monitoring global AI, privacy, copyright, and export-control developments; translating them into practical internal guidance
• Engaging with academics, regulators, industry groups, and civil society to develop norms and best practices for responsible AI development
The ideal candidate has navigated complex legal questions at the intersection of machine learning, data, and academic research in fast-moving technical environments. You'll need strong judgment, technical fluency, and the ability to work at the cutting edge of AI development while calibrating risk and enabling innovation.
Minimum qualifications: JD with active bar membership (CA or NY preferred); practical problem-solving in fast-changing technical contexts; exceptional communication and analytical skills; familiarity with EU AI Act, U.S. AI frameworks, GDPR/CCPA, and comparable regimes; interest in AI's societal impact; sound judgment in high-stakes, unsettled legal territory.
Preferred: 8+ years advising technology companies on copyright, privacy, data, AI regulation; direct regulator or standards-body engagement; working technical literacy in model training/evaluation/deployment; academic or publishing background; biosecurity, dual-use research, or export-control experience; experience advising on academic/industry research, publications, and collaborations.
