Volta is building a vertically integrated AI infrastructure platform with the mission to make compute as dependable and available as electricity. Backed by a $10B strategic partnership with a leading frontier AI lab, Series A funding from Andreessen Horowitz, and a $5B AI Infrastructure Fund, Volta is rapidly scaling from 100+ people across London, Palo Alto, and New York.
The Project Risk Manager, EMEA will lead the regional risk management programme across Volta's EMEA portfolio, providing leadership, oversight and assurance of risk management for complex AI infrastructure projects. This is a hands-on role combining technical risk management expertise with genuine business partnering alongside project directors, engineers, procurement, construction and commissioning teams.
Key responsibilities include:
**Leadership & Governance:** Establish consistent risk governance, standards, processes and methodologies across the regional portfolio. Integrate risk management throughout the project lifecycle across Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Project Controls, Commercial, Commissioning and Operations. Provide independent risk oversight and constructive challenge to project and functional leadership. Promote a proactive risk culture focused on early identification, clear ownership and risk-informed decision-making. Serve as regional risk management subject matter expert and adviser to project, regional and executive leadership.
**Risk Management:** Lead identification, assessment, mitigation, monitoring, escalation and closure of risks and opportunities. Build and maintain project risk registers with appropriate ownership, mitigation strategies and escalation paths. Evaluate key project delivery risks across design, permitting, grid connection, procurement, construction, commercial performance, commissioning and MW capacity delivery. Consolidate and evaluate project risks at regional level to identify emerging, systemic and correlated risks. Promote identification and realisation of opportunities related to cost, schedule, standardisation and overall delivery.
**Risk Analysis:** Lead qualitative and quantitative cost and schedule risk analysis using Monte Carlo simulation, schedule risk analysis and probabilistic techniques. Assess cost exposure, schedule uncertainty and confidence in achieving committed milestones. Develop risk-based recommendations for project contingency and management reserves. Analyse common and correlated regional risks to identify portfolio impacts. Provide risk analysis supporting investment decisions, stage gates and major contract awards.
**Reporting:** Develop concise project and regional reporting of top risks, emerging exposures, trends and mitigation effectiveness. Create project and portfolio dashboards providing visibility of risk exposure and confidence in achieving cost, schedule and capacity commitments. Monitor and report mitigation progress, overdue actions and significant issues requiring escalation. Provide risk information for project reviews, leadership meetings and governance forums.
**Risk Assurance & Continuous Improvement:** Conduct periodic project risk reviews and health checks. Test key project assumptions, forecasts and mitigation strategies. Identify recurring risks and successful mitigation strategies across the portfolio. Drive continuous improvement of risk processes, methodologies, tools and analytics.
**Requirements:**
Essential:
- Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, Business, Finance or related discipline, or equivalent relevant industry experience
- Significant experience in risk management, project controls or project delivery within complex EPC, construction, infrastructure, energy or major capital programmes
- Demonstrated experience leading project and portfolio risk management including identification, assessment, mitigation, monitoring and assurance
- Strong understanding of cost, schedule, contingency and project controls principles and their integration with project risk management
- Experience applying quantitative risk analysis and probabilistic techniques to evaluate project cost and schedule uncertainty
- Advanced experience with Monte Carlo simulation, cost and schedule risk analysis, scenario analysis and risk-based contingency development
- Strong understanding of EPC contracting, procurement, supply chain, change management and commercial risk
- Proven ability to influence and constructively challenge senior project and functional leaders in complex, fast-paced environments
- Strong written, verbal, facilitation and executive communication skills with ability to translate complex risk information into clear business insights
- Ability to identify systemic and correlated risks across multiple projects and provide regional-level insight
Desirable:
- Experience delivering hyperscale, AI, mission-critical or large-scale data centre programmes with knowledge of power, cooling, grid connection, long-lead equipment and commissioning
- Experience with enterprise or project risk management platforms integrated with scheduling and cost management systems
- Professional certification such as PMI-RMP, PMP, APM (PMQ or ChPP), AACE International or IRM
- Working knowledge of ISO 31000, PMBOK and associated standards (ISO 9001, ISO 45001, ISO 14001)
- Experience presenting portfolio risk and contingency to executive leadership and governance committees
- Experience with @Risk, Riskonnect, Safran or similar industry-standard software
