Slingshot AI is hiring a Product Psychologist to join the machine learning team and define what constitutes a great conversation for Ash, their AI mental health support platform. You'll report to the Clinical R&D Lead and partner closely with the ML conversation team to establish measurable quality standards for Ash's interactions.
In this role, you'll own the definition of conversation quality and translate it into benchmarks, evaluations, and training data that the ML team can use to improve the model. Rather than designing conversations turn-by-turn, you'll focus on identifying the core drivers of positive outcomes in mental health support—the interpersonal qualities that distinguish exceptional practitioners. You'll draw on clinical literature and evidence to build an iterative science around these principles.
Key responsibilities include: defining and measuring "great" conversations; making hypothesis-driven decisions about how Ash should behave globally and in specific situations; partnering with the Safety team to establish constraints and handle edge cases; recruiting, scaling, and coaching a distributed team of human reviewers to maintain calibration and quality standards; and providing clarity to conversation and ML teams when the path forward is ambiguous.
You'll need a PhD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology (or a license-eligible Master's with clinical training and supervision), extensive clinical experience, and a track record of working with systems to scale health products. You should have hands-on expertise in interpersonal skills, experience building and maintaining rating systems, and comfort working alongside ML teams. The ideal candidate is pragmatic, user-oriented, and can make decisive calls under uncertainty while remaining open to evidence.
