Benchling is an AI platform for biotech R&D used by over 200,000 scientists globally, including more than half of the world's top 50 biopharma companies. The company is rebuilding biotech for the AI era by combining clean, structured scientific data with AI agents and models built directly into scientific workflows.
As a Product Manager on the Study Lifecycle team, you will own the product strategy and roadmap for Studies, Sample Testing, and Process Development—core products that help scientists organize, plan, and connect experimental work across different phases of drug development. You'll work at the intersection of experimental planning, execution data, and analysis, deciding how studies tie together around scientific questions.
You launched Bioprocess in 2024 to help process development teams design and analyze experiments that turn molecules into manufacturable drugs. In 2025, Benchling announced a partnership with Merck to accelerate vaccine development and testing. Today, the team is implementing these products at the largest pharma companies globally, improving core functionality each quarter, and expanding into Analytical Sciences and downstream QC.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning the roadmap and outcomes for Studies, Sample Testing, and Process Development, including how experiment run data connects to analysis
- Spending time with customers and GTM teams to understand how scientists work, translating their needs into product direction
- Collaborating with design, engineering, GTM, and customers to build, validate, and ship products
- Using available tools (SQL, AI, developer environments) to move fast—pulling data to answer questions, building prototypes, or synthesizing customer insights
You'll need to make powerful software feel intuitive to daily users and dependable for teams integrating via APIs. The role requires a systems thinker with product taste who can walk into an unfamiliar domain, find structural patterns, and be effective quickly. A life sciences background is not required; the best PMs for this work bring diverse backgrounds and transferable instincts.
Benchling emphasizes AI fluency as core to how the company works. As part of the interview process, you'll complete a brief AI-focused exercise or discussion.
Requirements:
- 5–7+ years of product management or equivalent experience
- Diverse career history: worked across 2–3+ meaningfully different domains or product types (strongest signal of systems thinking and adaptability)
- Product taste: track record of building and improving products, translating user requirements into features worth building, understanding that shipping software means driving behavior change and habit formation
- Architectural fluency: experience guiding architectural decisions, reasoning about data models, state machines, or schema design; ability to spot when technical decisions create poor UX or limit extensibility
- Technical tool competency: resourceful use of tools (SQL, design tools, AI coding assistants) to help yourself and your team get work done
- Clear communication: ability to lead engaging professional conversations, adapt communication style to audience, read and respond to individuals
- Track record of outcomes: stayed long enough at key roles to ship, learn, and speak to what worked and what didn't
- Intellectual range: genuine curiosity that shows in learning and problem-solving; product management as a means to apply learnings from curiosity
Bonus qualifications:
- Experience in regulated or compliance-heavy industries (not limited to life sciences)
- Configuration-heavy, platform-style products
- B2B SaaS in growth/scaling stage
- Prior background as engineer, data scientist, or solutions consultant
