Workyard is a SaaS platform that automates time tracking, cost coding, compliance, and payroll integration for construction contractors. The company was founded in 2018 by a brother-and-sister team, pivoted from a staffing marketplace to SaaS in 2021, and now has ~70 employees across Australia and the US. As a Product Engineer, you will own the full lifecycle of product delivery end-to-end: shaping ideas with Product Managers, building alongside engineering peers, shipping, measuring impact, and helping decide what happens next. You'll work on one of the largest and least digitized industries in the US, solving hard problems around multi-rate overtime, prevailing wage, certified payroll, union agreements, and crews moving between job sites. Workyard is increasingly shifting toward AI-assisted compliance checking—flagging missed punches, wrong cost codes, and unapproved overtime before payroll runs. You'll help design how contractors learn to trust these agentic workflows, one feature at a time, while ensuring each piece delivers immediate value. The role emphasizes rapid prototyping (afternoons to days) and modern AI-assisted development practices. You'll work primarily with React (front-end), Laravel (back-end), and AWS infrastructure, plus native iOS/Android apps. The role is based in the Sydney office (hybrid, 2 days/week in-office) and reports directly to the Head of Product (Co-founder). Key responsibilities: - Understand contractor workflows deeply by reviewing customer research and working alongside product managers to identify where processes break down. - Own products from discovery through technical design, build, release, and iteration—no handoffs. - Make critical decisions about what to build, how to build it, and what to defer, always tied to customer impact and company growth. - Maintain high standards for software experience: weigh in on design, review code carefully, and help peers improve. - Balance speed, accuracy, and simplicity on every project, explaining trade-offs in plain language. Requirements: - 3+ years of experience owning and shipping production software end-to-end, including writing code and staying accountable for outcomes. - Strong full-stack engineering skills with a front-end lean; clean, production-grade code with sound fundamentals. - Experience designing data models and architecture for real products (not just building on top of existing ones); comfort with relational design, temporal changes, and messy integrations. - Demonstrated habit of spending time with end users and building differently based on that understanding. - High standards for simple, intuitive user experiences; technical correctness is table stakes. - Ability to find simpler paths by weighing customer impact against engineering effort. - Thoughtful perspective on agentic experiences and how products can earn trust to take work off users' plates. - Clear communication across technical and non-technical audiences; collaborative approach to decision-making. - Comfort prototyping early with AI tools to test ideas quickly. - Ability to work autonomously with loose direction and help shape fuzzy problems rather than waiting for detailed specs. Not a fit if: you're more excited by deep technical problems than customer-facing ones; you prefer others own the product experience and scoping while you focus purely on coding; or you're uninterested in learning construction, payroll, and business context.
