OpenAI is seeking a Product Designer to lead design foundations for generative UI across ChatGPT. This role focuses on raising OpenAI's craft bar by defining what excellent generative UI looks and feels like, establishing when and why models should choose particular interface patterns, and ensuring coherence across platforms.
Key responsibilities include: defining and translating high standards for craft and taste into principles and examples that influence both products and model training; owning and evolving foundations for generative UI including typography, sizing, spacing, layout, motion, accessibility, and responsive behavior; establishing a shared source of truth across platforms and improving layout and rendering systems; building a comprehensive GenUI design framework with opinionated guidance on interface patterns; translating design judgment into training material and using prototyping and evaluation workflows to test generated interfaces; studying emergent model behavior and turning promising outputs into reusable patterns; and partnering with research, engineering, product, and design teams to evolve the system.
Ideal candidates bring exceptional craft standards and are motivated to raise quality and distinctiveness across OpenAI. You should have sophisticated design taste and the ability to make design judgment explicit, teachable, and useful as model-training input. Deep experience designing and evolving product or design systems at scale is essential. You see design systems as living bodies of product judgment, not just component collections. You have exceptional command of typography, layout, spacing, responsive behavior, accessibility, and interaction design, and can move fluently between foundational systems work and concrete, high-craft product experiences. You care about choosing the right default and can explain not only what a pattern should look like but when and why a model or product team should choose it. You're skilled at turning ambiguous or inconsistent work into coherent, extensible systems and are curious about model training, evaluation, and emergent behavior.
