OpenAI's Consumer Verticals team is building purpose-built consumer experiences that leverage ChatGPT across domains like health, finance, and emerging agentic applications. The team combines research, engineering, product, design, and domain expertise to translate increasingly capable AI models into intuitive, trustworthy products that serve distinct user needs responsibly.
As a Product Designer on this team, you will lead end-to-end design of new consumer experiences across emerging verticals. This is a zero-to-one role that requires moving fluidly between broad product vision and detailed interaction design. You'll create prototypes that enable rapid learning and polished experiences ready to ship, while navigating domains where trust, accuracy, safety, and user agency are critical.
Key responsibilities include:
- Shape product and design direction for purpose-built consumer experiences in health, finance, and general consumer agents
- Design and ship high-quality products from early concepts through prototypes, interaction design, and final visual execution
- Define how ChatGPT should behave in different domains while maintaining a coherent OpenAI experience
- Explore new interaction models for AI systems that understand context, support complex decisions, and take action on behalf of users
- Partner closely with research, engineering, product management, safety, and domain experts to turn technical capabilities into useful and responsible products
- Conduct and apply user research to understand distinct needs, expectations, and risks within each vertical
- Balance specialized domain requirements with reusable patterns that strengthen ChatGPT and accelerate future product development
- Contribute to OpenAI's broader design culture and raise the bar for consumer product craft
Requirements:
- Substantial experience designing and shipping high-quality consumer software at scale
- Exceptional UX, UI, and interaction design skills with a high bar for craft at every stage
- Highly generative product thinking; ability to explore broadly, develop strong points of view, and turn ambiguity into clear product direction
- Experience leading zero-to-one initiatives or introducing new product categories, behaviors, or interaction models
- Ability to simplify complex systems without hiding details users need for informed decisions
- Strong instincts for trust, safety, transparency, and user control, particularly in consequential or sensitive experiences
- Fluency moving between domain-specific problems and broader systems or platform thinking
- Ability to communicate through compelling narratives and prototypes that build alignment across design, research, product, and engineering
- Excitement about defining how AI-first consumer products should look, feel, and behave as models become more capable and agentic
The role is based in OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters, with relocation assistance available for new employees.
