OpenAI is hiring a Product Designer for Codex, the team building an AI software engineer that developers can pair with, delegate to, and collaborate with on coding tasks. The mission is to make coding agents intuitive, accessible, and push the boundaries of what's possible in software development.
You'll be an early team member shaping product direction and design culture. Working in a fast-moving, cross-functional environment spanning research, engineering, product, and design, you'll collaborate closely with world-class engineers and researchers to bring cutting-edge AI capabilities to developers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Contributing to overall design and product direction of OpenAI products
- Designing and shipping high-quality products and improvements from early concepts through high-fidelity prototypes and visuals
- Partnering with engineering, product management, research, and design peers on both long-term strategy and short-term execution
- Conducting user research to understand software developers and refine products
- Contributing to and evolving the design system
- Helping establish design culture and grow the team
Much of the work is 0–1, requiring balance between high craft standards, fast iteration, and strong product intuition. You'll work on end-to-end design of new features and improvements across Codex products.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. Relocation assistance is offered.
Qualifications:
- Strong technical background with recent experience shipping code to production
- Deep motivation to make coding agents intuitive and accessible, expanding who can build software
- Portfolio demonstrating strong UX, UI, and interaction design skills with high bar for quality and craft
- Comfort with 0→1 environments, ability to navigate ambiguity, and crisp design thinking applied to technical trade-offs
- Excitement about being immersed in AI research and defining how AI-first products should look and behave
- Impactful communication and storytelling skills
Bonus qualifications:
- Prior experience with research or developer-focused products or workflows
- Shipped side projects with AI or contributed to open-source AI tools
