Scotch is building a next-generation operating system for beverage alcohol retailers, combining POS, payments, back office, and e-commerce into a unified platform. The company is modernizing the $1.6T beverage alcohol market and has raised $28M in funding from top-tier investors including VMG Partners, First Round, and Lerer Hippeau. The founding team includes alumni from Skupos (acquired 2023) and Drizly (acquired by Uber). You will own the Android-based POS terminal experience end-to-end, including checkout, payments, returns, and everyday workflows that cashiers and store staff rely on. This is not a role where you execute handed-down requirements—instead, you'll lead discovery research with cashiers and store staff through interviews, remote usability testing, and in-store visits, then use those insights to shape what gets built. You'll be the thought partner to product managers and the terminal engineering team, pushing back on over-specified solutions and surfacing problems the team didn't think to ask about. The constraints are real: the work happens on a busy counter with hardware like scanners, card readers, and receipt printers, and every extra step costs a store money. You'll design for long lines, constant interruptions, staff with varying experience levels, and hardware that must simply work. You'll report to the lead designer and collaborate to keep the terminal and back office feeling like one cohesive product. While your focus is the terminal, you may also contribute to web and back office design as priorities shift. You'll participate in the full product lifecycle, including roadmap conversations and post-launch iteration. The role is energized by ambiguity, motivated by real user impact, and excited about AI's role in both the products you design and your own workflow. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: - Own the terminal experience end-to-end, including checkout, payments, returns, and everyday workflows - Lead discovery with cashiers and store staff through interviews, remote usability testing, and in-store visits - Design for retail realities: long lines, interruptions, varying staff experience, and hardware constraints - Partner with product managers to define requirements and challenge assumptions - Collaborate with the Terminal engineering team to bring designs to life and drive AI-assisted design workflows - Extend the shared design system to the terminal for product cohesion - Participate in roadmap conversations and post-launch iteration - Contribute to web and back office design when needed REQUIREMENTS: - 4+ years of product/UX design experience in a startup or fast-moving environment - Experience designing and shipping mobile or tablet apps with strong grasp of native platform patterns - Portfolio demonstrating end-to-end work including research, problem framing, and shipped product - Strong visual and interaction design skills; ability to sweat details that matter and know when to push vs. ship - Skilled researcher who can plan discovery, synthesize findings quickly, and turn ambiguous problems into clear design direction - Experience partnering closely with PMs and pushing back constructively; ability to help define problems, not just solve them - Systems thinking: care about patterns, consistency, and design scalability - Comfortable working alongside engineers in fast-moving R&D and understanding implementation constraints - Proficient with Figma and Claude; able to prototype quickly to test assumptions and communicate behavior NICE TO HAVES: - Experience designing complex B2B or operational workflows (retail, logistics, or similar) - Familiarity with design systems—building, maintaining, and driving adoption - Active use of AI tools in your own workflow and excitement about designing AI-assisted experiences - Experience as a sole or lead designer - Exposure to frontend development or strong mental model of design-to-build handoff
