Basis builds production-grade AI agents that perform end-to-end work for major accounting firms, operating for hours at a time on economically valuable tasks. The company recently raised $100M at >$1B valuation with backing from Khosla Ventures, Accel, Google Ventures, and prominent technical leaders including OpenAI's applied AI team.
You will lead design at Basis as the company explores how modern AI fundamentally changes user experience assumptions. Rather than bolting chatbots onto legacy workflows, you'll design interfaces where humans and agents co-create work, hand tasks back and forth, and build trust in real time. You'll design both the screens accountants see and the invisible UI "toolbox" agents draw from when assembling those screens.
Key responsibilities:
- Design and redesign user-agent interactions across multiple surfaces, from initial sketch to polished release
- Invent agent-ready UI primitives that agents can assemble, edit, and explain in real time
- Partner closely with product and engineering on integrating agents into new and existing products
- Spend time doing accounting work in Basis to build deep user empathy and understanding
- Collaborate with founders to envision Basis 18 months out, then distill quarterly bets
- Rapidly learn accounting domain knowledge, LLM capabilities, and UX patterns for generally-intelligent software
You'll work in the NYC Flatiron office in a high-intensity, in-person environment with engineers, accountants, and founders.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4–8 years designing complex SaaS or AI tooling, with at least one 0→1 launch (extraordinary talent with fewer years considered)
- First-principles reasoning: break problems to fundamentals and rebuild without legacy bias
- Agent-native builder: already prototype with LLMs and can explain how they change UX
- Heavy AI user: use AI extensively for your own work (learning, brainstorming, writing, research)
- Committed to in-person NYC: five days a week on whiteboards with team
- Fast learning velocity: new domains and technologies click in weeks, not months
- Comfortable sketching flows live with engineers, then polishing interactions independently
- Autonomy and ownership: make decisions without committee approval, own problem spaces end-to-end
- All-in mindset: thrive in high-intensity culture with high-upside equity and open-ended scope
Bonus: practical accounting knowledge or prior product ownership experience.
