OpenAI is seeking a Product Design Manager to lead a team of eight or more product designers focused on consumer growth for ChatGPT and related products. This is a design leadership role centered on building an exceptional team, setting design direction, and maintaining a high bar for craft across the entire customer journey—from discovery and onboarding through activation, engagement, retention, and expansion. You will manage and develop a high-performing design team, providing clarity, feedback, and support to help designers do their best work. You'll set a clear design vision for how people discover, adopt, and continue getting value from AI-native products at global scale. Key responsibilities include keeping the craft bar high, deciding where the team should focus, matching people to opportunities, and making thoughtful tradeoffs. You'll partner closely with product, engineering, data science, research, content design, and go-to-market leaders to shape both long-term direction and near-term execution. You'll bring together research, data, experimentation, and design judgment to create meaningful value for users and the business. The role requires connecting dots across teams, journeys, and surfaces to ensure the overall experience feels intentional and cohesive. Ideal candidates have experience leading and growing a sizeable product design team with strong hiring and people development skills. You should have a strong eye for craft and know how to raise quality through clear direction, thoughtful critique, and coaching. Experience leading design for consumer products at scale—especially across complex journeys or connected work—is essential. You understand how design choices shape adoption, retention, revenue, and product health, and use data, research, and experimentation to guide decisions. You're comfortable moving between big-picture strategy, portfolio planning, and implementation details. You communicate clearly, build strong cross-functional relationships, and bring teams and senior leaders along. You're excited to rethink familiar growth patterns and create experiences truly native to AI, and you care deeply about building products that are useful, trustworthy, and worthy of people's time. OpenAI offers relocation assistance to new employees. The role is based in San Francisco HQ.
