Gusto is seeking an experienced Product Design Leader to build and manage the design function for its Banking team. You'll lead design across two products at different maturity stages: Wallet, an established consumer banking product helping workers manage their pay, and SMB Banking, a newer business banking offering for small businesses. This is a player-coach role where you'll manage an initial team of 3 designers while staying hands-on with high-stakes design decisions. Key responsibilities include: managing and growing a design team of 3, establishing shared rituals and practices across consumer and business banking efforts, coaching designers working on products at different stages (one optimizing live product, one defining new product), co-creating goals and success metrics with product and engineering partners, raising design quality standards, and staying hands-on with design work on SMB Banking's path to beta. You'll partner as an equal with Banking's PM and engineering leads, collaborate with Risk, Compliance, Legal, Data, and Ops teams given the regulated nature of financial products, and ensure Banking's products fit cohesively into Gusto's broader financial ecosystem by coordinating with adjacent design and product teams. Gusto serves over 500,000 small businesses and pays millions of their employees monthly. Wallet reaches a meaningful share of those employees directly, while SMB Banking targets the 6.2 million US employers with fewer than 100 employees and 550,000 new businesses started annually. The role offers the opportunity to invent banking products connected to pay, cash flow, and hiring from day one. Design at Gusto is AI-native—you'll use AI to prototype quickly, shorten feedback loops, and ship quality UX. The company operates teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, with hybrid flexibility across these locations.
