PlanetScale is a rapidly growing database platform company backed by over $100M in venture financing from top-tier VCs including a16z and Kleiner Perkins. The company serves innovative customers like Block, Anysphere (Cursor), MyFitnessPal, and Etsy, providing developers with the fastest and most reliable Postgres and Vitess/MySQL databases. As Brand Designer, you'll be a key member of the Marketing team, responsible for translating complex technical database concepts into compelling visual stories that resonate with developers and technical decision-makers. Your work will span multiple formats and contexts. Key responsibilities include: Visual Brand Development: Design web graphics including technical diagrams, illustrations, and interactive visual assets that simplify complex database concepts. Create compelling visual systems for campaigns and product launches. Design for digital, print, experiential, and merchandise contexts. In-Person Experiences: Design booth graphics, signage, and environmental branding for conferences and community events. Collaborate with the events team to create memorable, on-brand experiences. Design developer-focused merchandise and branded collateral including banners, posters, and stickers. Website and Digital Assets: Design creative website components, landing pages, and data visualizations. Create social media graphics, blog imagery, and digital marketing assets. Develop templates and design systems that enable the team to move quickly. Brand Evolution: Collaborate with marketing leadership to evolve and expand the PlanetScale brand identity. Explore new visual directions while maintaining brand coherence. Document design decisions and maintain brand guidelines. You bring a strong portfolio demonstrating versatile design skills across digital, print, and experiential work. You have deep understanding of design fundamentals: typography, color, composition, and visual hierarchy. You're comfortable working in both brand and production modes—thinking big picture while executing in details. You're self-directed, able to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, and collaborative in incorporating feedback while maintaining creative vision. Bonus qualifications include experience designing for technical or developer-focused brands, proficiency in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite, comfort using AI to build working drafts, understanding of design systems, and enthusiasm for learning about databases and developer tools.
