Axle Energy is building software infrastructure for the decarbonized energy system, controlling hundreds of thousands of energy assets including vehicle charging, heating systems, and home batteries. The company operates at high speed in a legacy industry, moving gigawatt-hours of electrons while backed by world-leading investors like Accel. As the first product designer, you will be a foundational pillar in a flat, autonomous organization. You'll operate across the business to raise design quality through direct delivery, enablement, and coaching. Your responsibilities include understanding user problems and designing experiences for both B2C mass-market consumers and B2B2C advanced users; building design systems and scalable solutions in Claude and code to help teams ship faster; deepening the company's culture of user research by understanding how people experience Axle's products; leading visual identity and storytelling across web, animation, and video; and working with global clients to improve their user experiences. You'll thrive in ambiguity, taking a pragmatic, outcome-first approach. You're excited about bringing sophisticated technology to broader audiences and willing to dive into technical details. You're deeply curious about how people experience the world, have a strong aesthetic sense, and know what good design looks like. The role offers meaningful equity alongside competitive salary (£75k–£200k base + equity), enhanced parental leave, bi-annual retreats, and hybrid working (2–3 days/week in the dog-friendly Farringdon office). You'll directly shape the future of energy markets and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon world.
