Familiar Machines & Magic is building a Physical AI platform centered on Familiars—physically embodied AI systems designed to form long-term, emotionally intelligent relationships with people. The company was founded by industry leaders from iRobot, Outrider, and Amazon, with a collective track record of deploying over 50 million consumer robots and advancing navigation, machine learning, and human-robot interaction. You will lead UX productization across the Familiar's app, web, and on-product experiences, creating a cohesive system that bridges digital and physical touchpoints. This role requires thinking beyond individual features to how the entire experience works as a whole—from everyday interactions and system states to edge cases and failure recovery. For example, when a Familiar can't charge, you'll consider how the issue is communicated, how the system responds, how it reaches FM&M, and how it ultimately gets resolved for the customer. Key responsibilities include: - Translating the Familiar's product vision, behaviors, and use cases into a cohesive, launch-ready customer experience across app, on-product interfaces, and digital touchpoints - Defining interaction patterns, system states, and frameworks that create a scalable experience across the Familiar ecosystem - Establishing the UX visual language and design system across app, web, and the Familiar's embodied behaviors and expressions - Partnering across Design, Product, AI, Software, Hardware, and User Experience Research to translate the Familiar's character and personality into shippable experiences - Designing for the realities of a physical AI product, including everyday interactions, system feedback, edge cases, failure, and recovery - Staying hands-on throughout development using prototyping to explore, validate, and guide the experience through implementation - Partnering with Product, Research, and Engineering to define how the experience is evaluated in-market and evolved based on behavioral data and customer feedback This role reports to Morgan Pope, Director of Companionship Design, and is part of a mission-driven, culture-forward team. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: - Extensive experience leading complex UX products from definition through launch and continued evolution - Deep digital UX expertise spanning system-level experience design and detailed interaction design - Robust experience partnering with UX researchers and participating in diverse forms of user research - Strong design judgment and visual sensibility, informed by a sophisticated understanding of the evolving digital landscape - Significant experience shipping consumer products that bridge software and physical experiences (connected devices, robotics, wearables, gaming, automotive, smart home, consumer electronics, or adjacent categories especially relevant) - Deep experience establishing cohesive UX patterns and frameworks across multiple platforms and surfaces - Strong leadership, judgment, and influence across multidisciplinary teams with a clear UX point of view - Fluency with emerging technologies, including AI, and a thoughtful perspective on their role in advancing UX design, prototyping, and product development - Ability to see the whole system while caring deeply about details; bring clarity to ambiguous problems; balance creative ambition with technical realities; lead through expertise and collaboration while remaining hands-on
