Cognite is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to design and operate the core serverless execution engine and Workflows orchestration layer that power the company's industrial AI and automation platform. This is a high-impact role focused on building distributed systems that directly serve Fortune 500 industrial companies managing critical operational data.
You will own platform reliability, designing for multi-tenant, multi-cloud, high-throughput workloads with deterministic execution and zero data loss. Key responsibilities include architecting the scheduling, queueing, and retry mechanisms that gracefully degrade under pressure; defining clean, versioned REST and event-driven APIs that downstream teams and external customers depend on; and instrumenting services with distributed tracing, structured logging, and alerting (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, Honeycomb) to surface failures before customers notice.
You'll champion test automation (unit, integration, smoke tests), maintain deployment pipelines for confident production shipping, and profile/resolve bottlenecks in execution throughput and cold-start latencies. A bonus focus is modeling compute and storage costs for function execution and identifying optimizations to reduce cloud spend without sacrificing reliability.
