Azul is the only company focused 100% on Java, building the Java platform for the modern cloud enterprise. You will own specific areas across three core products: Azul Intelligence Cloud (a SaaS platform that turns production Java runtime data into actionable intelligence, working with any JVM vendor), Azul Optimizer Hub (a self-hosted component that makes Java applications start fast and stay fast via cloud-native compilation and warm-up orchestration), and Payara InSight (real-time visibility and alerting for Azul Payara Server instances).
As Principal Product Manager, you are an individual contributor (no direct reports) who leads through clarity, evidence, and influence. You own strategy, roadmap, pricing, and market positioning for your assigned areas across these three products. You will define success metrics, instrument them, and drive outcomes including sales pipeline generation, pilot-to-production conversion, adoption, and retention. You report to the VP of Product Management and work directly with the CPO, CEO, CRO, and CTO—this is a visible, high-exposure role.
Key responsibilities include: setting multi-year strategy for your areas (where to win, which segments to pursue, build vs. partner decisions); translating strategy into sequenced, credible roadmaps; building alignment across engineering, sales, and marketing; owning pricing and packaging decisions (especially for Intelligence Cloud's complex metering across diverse Java estates); running customer requirement sessions and directing UX/UI work; partnering with marketing on positioning and launches; supporting deals and handling escalations; and maintaining technical credibility with engineering teams. You will stay embedded in sprints, design reviews, and implementation trade-offs. You are expected to hold your own technically—understanding JVM architecture, JIT compilation, and warm-up principles well enough that engineers treat you as a peer.
Azul's customers include 36% of the Fortune 100 and 50% of Forbes' top 10 World's Most Valuable Brands. Intelligence Cloud is a new product and Azul's primary growth bet—early enough that you will shape what it becomes. The role expects you to operate effectively across products at different stages and sold through different motions, and to bring order to a startup-shaped environment.
The company is fully remote, async, multi-time-zone, and hiring for judgment, curiosity, and low ego.
**Requirements**
Required:
- 8+ years in product management, including several years owning a product or product line end-to-end (strategy through launch through revenue)
- Track record shipping enterprise SaaS in an adjacent market: application performance monitoring, application security, observability, optimization, systems management, or log analytics
- Fluency with AI tools and experience operating in an AI-first product management organization; you use them in daily product work and have a view on where they help and where they don't
- Deep technical fluency: can read architecture diagrams, follow engineering debates, and ask questions that change the answer
- Demonstrated ownership of pricing and packaging for a technical product, including cross-functional work to get models approved and into market
- Understanding of DevOps engineers, platform engineers, and developers as key influencers in enterprise sales cycles
- Strong domain knowledge of public cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP) and Kubernetes
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English—equally effective with engineers and Fortune 100 CIOs
- Comfortable in fully remote, async, multi-time-zone setup: self-directed and a strong writer (writing is how decisions get made)
- Comfortable in startup-shaped environments where bringing order to chaos is part of the job
Nice to have:
- Hands-on software or quality engineering background (have written code and debugged production systems)
- Experience with open source communities
- Familiarity with cloud cost optimization
- Experience taking a new product from early traction to durable revenue
- Working knowledge of Java and Java development tooling
- Familiarity with Jakarta EE application servers (Payara, WebLogic, WebSphere, JBoss) and OpenTelemetry
- Experience working across multiple products at different stages or sold through different motions
- Experience with infrastructure software that customers deploy and operate themselves, not just SaaS
