Flex is a growth-stage fintech company transforming how renters pay rent by enabling flexible payment schedules throughout the month. As Principal Product Designer for Consumer, you'll lead design strategy and execution for a full business vertical, shaping the vision and owning end-to-end delivery.
This is a senior individual contributor role with significant influence across the organization. You'll drive design direction through the artifacts you create, standards you establish, and designers you mentor—not through direct reports. You'll stay deeply involved in design exploration on critical projects, building prototypes that communicate vision and unlock opportunities.
Key responsibilities include: leading design for your vertical by shaping vision and strategy; aligning multiple cross-functional teams (product, engineering, data, risk, compliance) around cohesive solutions; setting and maintaining high quality bars through critiques and feedback; designing with empathy for people under financial pressure, ensuring clarity and dignity in money-related flows including error and recovery states; building strategic prototypes and artifacts to align leadership on opportunities; supporting company strategy with qualitative research, data, and design expertise; partnering on experiment design to define hypotheses, guardrails, and success metrics; establishing design-thinking methods and toolkits for broader team adoption; and evolving the design system.
The role operates in a highly measured, cross-functional environment where most designs run as experiments before becoming defaults. You'll need strong creative problem-solving skills, curiosity about data and metrics, comfort with constraints, and willingness to adapt based on evidence. All design disciplines—design thinking, interaction design, and visual design—are essential.
