Via Transportation is seeking a Principal Product Designer to lead design for the Transit Operations platform—a core product that powers how transit agencies manage and operate their services daily. This is a senior individual contributor role for a designer who thrives on complexity and systems thinking. You will own design for strategic, interconnected areas of the platform, transforming complex operational workflows, business requirements, and technical constraints into clear, intuitive, and purposeful experiences. The role spans from early exploration through polished, production-ready design. You'll work closely with Product and Engineering to frame problems, explore possibilities, make thoughtful tradeoffs, and drive high-quality decisions. Key responsibilities include leading design for complex operational workflows; developing deep user understanding and designing experiences aligned with dispatcher and operator needs; using research, data, experimentation, and feedback to validate decisions; identifying opportunities and bringing clarity to ambiguous problem spaces; raising the quality bar for the Transit Operations product and influencing the broader Design organization through your work and collaboration; and exploring emerging technologies like AI as part of your everyday workflow. You should bring extensive experience designing and shipping complex digital products and platforms, with a portfolio demonstrating exceptional product thinking and the ability to create scalable solutions for sophisticated operational systems. You'll need proven ability to navigate ambiguity and lead complex initiatives end-to-end, a high bar for craft and product quality, strong communication and storytelling skills, high autonomy and ownership, strong collaboration across functions, and a creative, curious mindset. Passion for improving how transportation works for communities is essential. Compensation includes a base salary of $200,000–$230,000 (plus equity and variable pay where applicable), comprehensive health coverage with low-cost dental and vision, 401(k) with generous company match, fully paid parental leave, family planning and mental health support, pet insurance, wellness perks, and 20 days of PTO annually.
