PermitFlow is an applied AI company transforming construction permitting and compliance workflows. The company has raised over $90M (Series B) from top-tier investors and serves the nation's builders with AI-powered solutions for permitting, licensing, inspections, and project closeouts. The role is based in New York City with a hybrid schedule (3 days in-office per week). As Principal Product Designer, you are the most senior individual contributor on the design team, setting the vision and craft standards for PermitFlow's most complex, highest-leverage product surfaces. This is a hands-on role focused on the hardest problems in construction permitting—a workflow-dense, high-stakes industry being rebuilt as an intelligent product. Key responsibilities include: owning the design vision for highest-impact product areas from problem framing through execution; setting strategic direction for how permitting workflows, automation, and AI-assisted decisions are designed to ensure users understand, trust, and control the product's output; partnering with the Head of Design, product, and engineering leadership to shape the roadmap; raising the craft bar across the design team through modeling exceptional work, strengthening critique culture, and mentoring designers; evolving the design language and systems thinking that enable cohesive, scalable experiences; moving fluidly between deep detail and big-picture direction while maintaining quality and execution pace; becoming a functional expert on construction permitting and licensing; and collaborating with sales and marketing on collateral and branding. Required qualifications: 10+ years designing dense B2B software with deep experience in workflow-heavy products and real complexity; demonstrated ability to operate as a force multiplier, elevating other designers' work and defining excellence; strong systems thinking paired with exceptional interaction and visual craft; experience designing AI-powered or highly technical products, or a clear point of view on making AI legible and trustworthy; high tolerance for ambiguity in a fast-moving environment; excellent communication and storytelling skills; technical fluency and hands-on comfort with implementation realities; and proficiency with Figma, Notion, Linear, or similar tools. Portfolio required showing track record of leading high-craft, complex products from concept through launch with clear evidence of design decisions and impact.
