Rocket Lab Optical Systems, part of Rocket Lab's Space Systems division, is seeking a Principal Engineer for Space Payloads to lead the design, development, and integration of next-generation space-based electro-optical sensor systems. This role serves as the definitive technical authority for mission-critical space domain and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) solutions for Department of Defense and Intelligence Community customers.
You will own the technical baseline across all program phases, from requirements definition through integration, test, and sustainment. Key responsibilities include serving as the technical authority for systems engineering, hardware, software, and test; chairing program gate reviews (SRR through TRR); directing payload and ground systems architecture development; overseeing engineering execution to meet cost, schedule, and technical objectives; and managing subcontractor oversight.
You will champion engineering excellence by enforcing standards, processes, and quality while advancing Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Digital Engineering practices. The role requires proactive risk management, stakeholder engagement with customer technical teams and leadership, and mentoring engineers across disciplines to foster collaboration and knowledge transfer.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline with 12+ years of professional experience, an active Secret/Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility, and proven ability to deliver complex aerospace or defense systems on cost and schedule. Prior experience as a chief engineer or technical authority on a program of record or major defense contract is essential. You must demonstrate strong capability in leading large-scale proposals, interfacing with senior government customers, and motivating teams across diverse organizations without direct line authority. Willingness to travel up to 25% and ability to work in classified environments 25%+ of the time are required.
Nice-to-have qualifications include a Master's degree or PhD, recent space mission support experience with payload integration focus, 5+ years with EO/IR, radar, or hyperspectral sensor technologies, and 5+ years developing command & control or mission planning systems for space assets.
