Homebase is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead technical strategy across its core product domains: Payroll, Scheduling, Time Tracking, and HR Management. This is a senior technical leadership role focused on architecting scalable, maintainable systems that serve 100K+ small businesses. Key responsibilities include: - Drive Homebase's technical vision and architecture across core product domains in collaboration with other Staff and Principal Engineers, ensuring coherence across systems. - Champion and execute Homebase's API strategy to enable internal velocity, external integrations, and partnership opportunities. - Lead decomposition of core product systems into well-bounded services using domain-driven design and service-oriented architecture principles. - Identify and resolve cross-cutting technical challenges—data consistency, performance bottlenecks, reliability gaps—proactively. - Support and champion engineering culture, driving standards and patterns through influence and mentorship of senior and staff engineers. - Partner with Product, Data, Design, and Engineering leadership to align technical strategy with business priorities and shape roadmaps. - Experiment with and deploy AI-powered tools to accelerate engineering workflows (code generation, test automation) and coach teams on adoption. Required experience: - 12+ years of software engineering with significant depth in scaling distributed systems and evolving legacy architectures. - Strong background in Ruby/Rails preferred. - Track record of defining and executing technical strategy across multiple product domains or teams. - Deep expertise in domain-driven design, API design, SOA, and event-driven architectures. - Proven ability to influence without authority through clarity and collaboration. - Strong communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences. - Active AI fluency—daily use of AI tools and demonstrated ability to help teams adopt AI effectively. - Comfort in high-velocity environments prioritizing shipping and iteration. Experience with payroll, workforce management, or complex business domains is a strong plus. The role emphasizes mentoring, architectural leadership, and championing AI adoption across engineering teams.
