Zoox is seeking a Plant Supplier Quality Engineer to join its Supplier Quality team at the assembly plant in Hayward, CA. This role is critical to protecting the assembly line and ensuring all incoming supplier-provided components meet quality specifications at the point of use.
You will serve as the first responder to supplier material quality issues identified on the assembly line, in receiving, or in pre-assembly inspection areas. Your responsibilities include immediately implementing containment activities (sort, rework, scrap, stop shipment) to prevent line disruption, and owning the in-plant disposition of non-conforming materials by raising and managing Non-Conformance Reports with proper segregation, identification, and disposition of affected parts.
You will lead corrective actions for in-plant supplier quality issues, partnering directly with Manufacturing, Vehicle Engineering, and the Supplier Quality Engineer managing the supplier site. Working closely with Manufacturing and Vehicle Systems Engineering, you'll assess the immediate impact of part quality issues on assembly processes and identify necessary changes to assembly operations and work instructions.
Additional responsibilities include analyzing and reporting in-plant supplier quality metrics (line fallout rates, non-conformance trends, containment effectiveness) to leadership, and identifying systemic quality risks based on in-plant failures to collaborate with the broader SQE team.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent technical discipline. Minimum 6+ years of experience in Plant Quality, Manufacturing Quality, or Supplier Quality roles within high-volume manufacturing (automotive, aviation preferred). Demonstrated production plant environment experience with strong understanding of assembly line operations and material quality impact on production flow. Expertise in structured problem-solving methodologies (8D, Six Sigma Green/Black Belt preferred, Fishbone Analysis, 5 Whys, statistical analysis). Strong knowledge of quality tools including Process Flow Diagrams, FMEAs, Control Plans, SPC, and MSA. Familiarity with APQP and PPAP supplier quality processes beneficial. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and solid knowledge of GD&T for rapid part assessment.
