OpenAI is seeking a Senior Manager of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) to lead safety operations across its rapidly expanding robotics facilities. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for site-level EHS strategy and execution as the robotics footprint scales across multiple locations.
The role involves partnering across Robotics, Engineering, Operations, Facilities, Workplace, Construction, Security, People, Legal, and external partners to integrate safety into facility design, equipment deployment, work planning, and operating decisions. Key responsibilities include:
- Owning site-level EHS strategy, priorities, and execution for the robotics portfolio while maintaining alignment with company-wide standards
- Anticipating EHS requirements for new operations, equipment, processes, construction phases, staffing ramps, and 24/7 operations
- Leading proactive risk identification and control across machine safety, ergonomics, electrical safety, material handling, hazardous materials, and contractor safety
- Building and maintaining comprehensive site EHS programs including risk assessments, procedures, training, inspections, corrective-action systems, emergency preparedness, and compliance processes
- Providing visible field leadership across shifts and operating conditions, establishing mechanisms for effective EHS coverage and escalation
- Leading incident response and investigation for significant events, including root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and lessons-learned communication
- Using incident, near-miss, inspection, and operational data to identify recurring risks and drive preventive actions
- Overseeing contractor and contingent-worker safety interfaces across multi-employer worksites
- Maintaining regulatory compliance with Cal/OSHA and OSHA requirements while developing metrics and reporting for leadership visibility
The ideal candidate has 15+ years of progressive EHS experience with significant leadership responsibility in robotics, advanced manufacturing, R&D, or similarly complex technical environments. Required expertise includes occupational safety and health, machine safety, ergonomics, electrical safety, hazardous energy, material handling, hazardous materials, and incident investigation. Experience supporting complex sites through rapid scale, construction and operational overlap, commissioning, and transition to 24/7 operations is essential. Strong working knowledge of OSHA and Cal/OSHA requirements, demonstrated ability to influence senior technical and operational leaders, and experience building EHS systems for emerging or rapidly scaling organizations are critical. The role requires clear communication with executives, engineers, operators, contractors, and external partners, plus comfort operating independently in ambiguity with strong judgment balancing operational speed, technical complexity, compliance, and risk.
